Anamorphic Art

WHAT TO DO:

First, choose a distorted picture from one of the books available. Next, take one of the reflective cylinders and place it into the designated area in front of the picture. What do you notice when looking into the mirror? You should notice the picture became undistorted when placing the mirror next to it.

WHAT HAPPENED?

The pictures in each of the books, are examples of a form of art called anamorphisis. Anamorphic artwork appears to be a distorted, or a strange image at first, but when the picture is looked at from another angle, the real image becomes clear and visible.

These anamorphic images are much like the "fun" mirrors which maybe seen at a fair. The exception is that these mirrors work in reverse order. When looking at the reflection of the image, it becomes clear, instead of a distorted image.

HOW TO MAKE YOUR OWN ART...

To make your own anamorphic art, take one of the photocopied polar grids. First draw your picture on the normal square grid. Using the coordinates on your original image, copy the points and lines onto the polar grid. When your image is finished, simply find a paper towel roll and smooth some tin foil over. This will create a reflective cylinder in which your distorted image may be seen clearly.
