What is Anamorphic Art?

Anamorphic pictures are drawings and paintings which appear distorted and almost unrecognizable to the unaided eye. When an anamorphic picture is viewed from a special angle or viewed using an aid, the picture becomes recognizable to the viewer.  Anamorphic art had its main roots in France, China, and the Netherlands, but anamorphic art has also been seen in other cultures.

Anamorphic images have been around for many centuries. In this area of art, there are many different forms. The most common type of anamorphic art is the type used in the KML anamorphic art exhibit. This type of image is viewed by looking at the reflection of the image on a cylindrical mirror. The image is then easily recognized.

Anamorphic art images were mainly used for fun and entertainment years ago. These images were also used during war years. The images created were actually coded messages that could be delivered and yet remain confidential. One everyday form of an anamorphic image could be your shadow. This is true because your shadow is distortion of your body from the point of view of the light source creating the shadow.
